In 1998, I left a good life and good friends in Cold Lake, moved to Sparwood, BC and married Ron, who I had almost married in 1971. Unable to get a full-rime job, I'm substitute teaching. Though beautiful country, life here is pretty dull so I look forward to opportunities to get away and this blog lets me share my new life with family and friends.

I forgot to tell you about a very special evening on board, when they announced that Duke Daniels of The Platters would be performing in the Palladium, which is a huge amphitheatre. We enjoyed the performance thoroughly and heard him tell what a privilege it had been for him to sing with The Platters. He began with my favourite, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes which brought tears to my eyes. When he ended Only You, he held that last note too long to be humanly possible but it was impressive. Song after song sounded exactly as we all remember them and I was captivated.
When we got home, I researched The Platters and Duke Daniels online. Never, with the original Platters or subsequent groups with the same name and same songs, could I find a Duke Daniels as part of the group. He was a fraud!

Maybe "sing with the Platters" meant that he opened for them one time or something. Or maybe he just meant that he used to crank on his Platters records in his living room and then sing with them. Semantics, Mommy. Fraud is a hrash word. A new friend/aquaintance of mine (not really sure where he fits in yet) used to work on cruise ships--apparently, cruise ship entertaining is a lot about illusion and misdirection... kind of like the movie we went to see last night--The Prestige. Very entertaining.
(ramble, ramble, ramble... get back to your reading, Becca.)

I looked him up and would tend to think that he wasn't even alive at the time of the platters. But his pinnacle of achievement was to have a song in the nasty teen movie "American Pie."

But, mom, if you did enjoy it as you say you did, then it doesn't matter who he is! What was that song I sang when I took voice lessons? You really liked it too I remember.

No, Phil. That was an Everly Brothers song called "Dream." Becca accompanied you on the guitar and you did it beautifully! I have a recording of it.

Duke was actually a member of the Platters. He's not a fraud, but he's not on the famous songs either. He was with them probably for most of the 70's, but I'm not sure of the dates.

After having worked with Duke Daniels on MANY different occasions, I can honestly say that Duke was, in fact, a member of one of the Platters groups. The one in particular was put together by original Platters bass Herb Reed that also included Nate Nelson, Liz Davis, and Ron Austin. This group toured and recorded throughout the 70's and early 80's.

I'm ashamed that whomever put the original blog didn't do their homework, yet was quick to judge and call Duke a fraud. Shame on you.....

Let's all pray for PEACE... Too much fighting going on in the world, too many people dying unnecessarily; hurt and pain on both sides of the fences of war.. God bless all those who have died, may they rest in peace. May he give those who were injured strength and those who ignite the violence the courage to say STOP. Call a truce.. God bless Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Israel and Pakistan and all other countries and islands throughout the world who need peace.. let there be peace in 2009...

DUKE DANIELS WAS NOT ONLY WITH ORIGINAL PLATTER HERB REED’S GROUP BUT SANG WITH THE ACTUAL OFFICIAL PLATTERS IN THE LATE 60’s WITH SONNY TURNER UNTIL THE GROUP BROKE UP IN 1970. HE WAS THERE WHEN THEY HEADLINED THE FIRST EVER ROCK N ROLL REVIVAL SHOW AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN 1969. AFTER THE GROUP BROKE UP HE JOINED WITH ORIGINAL MEMBER HERB REED’S GROUP WHICH ALSO INCLUDED NATE NELSON (ORIGINAL LEAD OF THE FLAMINGOS) AND TOURED WITH THEM THROUGH THE 70’s & 80’s. HE WAS NOT A PART OF THE ORIGINAL GROUP IN THE 50’s NOR DID HE EVER CLAIM TO BE, BUT SHAME ON WHOEVER WROTE THIS ARTICLE CALLING HIM A FRAWD WHEN THEY CLEARLY DID NIT DO ANY REAL RESEARCH!!!
